Recently, in order to conserve water, the California State Government put 96 million black plastic balls in the Los Angeles Reservoir to shield the sun from exposure and prevent water evaporation and algae growth.

Los Angeles Mayor Jasiti and City Water and Electricity Bureau staff put 20,000 plastic sunshades into the reservoir on August 10, and the entire reservoir surface will be completely covered by 96 million black balls. This method saves $250 million compared to another water-saving method originally considered by the Hydropower Bureau.

These black shade balls are about 10 cm in diameter and cover 71 hectares of water in the reservoir. They can isolate water from dust, rain, birds, and wild animals. They can also reduce the photosynthesis of algae, reduce the production of carcinogens, and improve drinking water quality , Can also reduce 1.1 billion liters of water evaporation per year. This is equivalent to the water in 454 Olympic swimming pools, enough to supply 8,100 people a year.

Los Angeles Water and Electricity Authority official Adams said that Los Angeles is the first city in the world to use sunscreens to protect drinking water.

Jasiti said that in California's historic drought period, bold innovations are necessary to achieve the largest water-saving goal.
